About Me

My name is Lourensa Loubser. I am a Registered Psychological Counsellor with a BA Psychological Counselling degree, and an Honours B. Psych degree, a Divorce Mediation Certificate (FAMAC), as well as an HIV/AIDS Care Counselling certificate. My Health Professions Council of South Africa registration number is 0034576. I am also a member of the Board of Healthcare Funders.

I am a mature, married mother of two adult children with a sincere appreciation for the difficulties and trauma that people suffer in life. My natural ability to connect with people, coupled with a gift for listening and a heart full of compassion enables me to create a non-judgemental, confidential and safe space for my clients. Each client is assured of individualised care.

My focus is to meet the needs of my clients, whether that may be to improve someone’s sense of wellbeing or to overcome behavioural, relationship or emotional difficulties. Part of this process is to assist with self-exploration, increasing self-awareness, developing skills and coping strategies or enhancing a sense of accomplishment. Clients who are experiencing a sense of hopelessness are supported and encouraged so that they do not lose hope in the face of adversity. Most of my clients are empowered through the counselling process to develop into healthy, well-balanced and well-equipped individuals. My heart for people inspires me to believe that everyone has an extraordinary purpose in life and therefore I make every effort to assist my clients to accomplish theirs.

I have been working in my community since 2004 to advance psychological growth and wellbeing, especially in the area of trauma, which varies from homicide, sexual abuse, suicide, domestic violence, to armed robbery.

What is Counselling?

The theory of counselling is a reflective relationship between the counsellor and the client, a process of listening and using specific skills to assist clients with adjusting to mainstream life transitions or normative stressors. The aim of counselling is to develop a growth-oriented adaptation to changing life circumstances and creating a preventative framework.

Essentially the goal of counselling is to promote a person’s developing into a well-balanced person in all the spheres of their life.

Approach

My approach is the triage approach, according to which there is a connection between the spirit, soul and body. I follow my own unique counselling style and work holistically with all people irrespective of their identity or their background.

What we think affects us emotionally, intellectually and physically, therefore our quality of life and health are determined by the quality of our thinking. I attach great value to people gaining the knowledge of and understanding their thinking processes in order that growth may develop on a personal level, where one may aspire to a hopeful and peaceful future.

The “therapeutic alliance”, active collaboration between the counsellor and client, has proved to be very beneficial.
